For a recent home office that Fluff Your Stuff completed, designer, Lorrie, wanted to do something gender-neutral, sleek, and a little bit out-of-the-box. She immediately knew that wallpaper could do the trick. With the slightly metallic, seaglass/chocolate birch tree design as a backdrop, she added a streamlined desk, luxurious floor-to-ceiling curtains, and sleek ladder bookshelves. We’ve got another beautiful room transformation for you this week + another “big reveal” video clip. Fluff Your Stuff Owner, Lorrie, put together this warm and vibrant living room design for a client in Lincoln. Enjoy!

The story behind this design is really special for us. Jennifer wanted us to help her mom, Karen, revamp her living room, which was suffering from “a lot of beige syndrome.” (We know many of you out there can identify.) When we first met with the mother-daughter duo, Karen was hesitant about how much to do the space. Eventually, we all decided to just go for it, and we couldn’t have had a more wonderful, trusting client! The rules were that we had to keep her existing couches and TV hutch. Our goal was to make as big a change as possible with as few additions as we could. Also, we wanted to keep the space cozy and kid-friendly. Some curtains, a bench, a new rug, some pillows, and a reading nook later, we were ready to go! Without further ado, here are the “before” pictures:

The best part is that we took some video of what we call “The Big Reveal” – the part where we show the client their updated space when we’re done installing the design. It’s always so exciting to see the client’s reaction!
And if that wasn’t the cherry on the cake, the email we received from Jennifer after all was said and done made our hearts melt. Here is a snippet from that email:
We actually ended up having supper with my parents last night (they wanted to go out and celebrate their new room!), and they both kept commenting on how beautiful the room(s) is. My dad kept saying “what’s not to love about it” and my mom kept saying how she finally has a room that looks like it came out of a magazine. She is so happy. My dad whispered a thank you to me, saying that it’s really neat to see how happy this made my mom.
My mom is such a wonderful person. She is one of the kindest, most giving people I know. She always focuses on making everyone else feel happy and special. Thank you for making her feel so special now. I can’t even begin to describe exactly how happy my mom is. It’s really cool. Thank you a thousand times over.

Everyone could use a cozy little area dedicated to curling up with a good book. Here are the things you’ll need to create your very own reading nook:
* The perfect spot – Ask yourself if natural light is a must, and if you’ve got enough room for a comfy chair + a floor lamp or accent table.
* A comfy chair – A reading nook is the perfect spot to try out that funky pattern or interesting color. Have fun with it.
* An accent table – Finding a vintage or antique option OR something with a unique shape/color will help make your nook special.
* A lamp – If you’ve got a big enough accent table, try a table lamp. If you’re pressed for table space, go with a floor lamp. Remember, the light should be coming from over your shoulder, so make sure you position your lamp that way.
* A rug – A small rug can perfectly define a stand-alone space such as a ready corner.
* Books (and maybe a place to store them, like a cabinet or bookshelf) – This one doesn’t need much explaining!
* Cozy Stuff – A reading nook wouldn’t be right without some soft throw blankets and fluffy pillows.

Whenever people find out that I’m an Interior Designer, they immediately want to know more. “Your job must be so fun!” they speculate. It’s true – our jobs our fun, creatively fulfilling, and never boring. However, there’s more to it than matching fabrics or picking out furniture. Much more. So for my blog this month, I’ve decided to do an overview of a day in the life of an Omaha Interior Designer (which may look a little different than that of designers in other cities or at other firms, but that’s what makes us unique!) In no, particular order, here are a few of the things that occupy our workdays:
Team Meetings
The Fluff Team usually gets together on Monday mornings to discuss client workload, collaborate on big projects, and work through scheduling conflicts. We usually also have good stories to tell, do movie reviews, and laugh a LOT.
Appointments
For our appointment, teams of two designers pair up for Design Consultations, Fast Fluffs, Design Coachings, and hourly shopping.
Snack Time
Yeah…sometimes we need a chocolate break. Or a coffee break. Or a hummus break…
Driving
We spend more time in the car than you would think…especially since we travel to places like Lincoln, Wahoo, and many places in Iowa. We always joke that we should have a camera crew follow us because of all of the crazy situations we find ourselves in.
Ordering + Organizing
To get you the fun, custom pieces that make your space a “Wow”, we spend a lot of time placing and tracking orders from our vendors. Then, we spend some more time trying to figure out how to fit it all into the storage unit attached to our office.
Lunch Breaks
You’ll often catch us at our favorite lunch spots – Qdoba, Chipotle, Ingredient, Panera, and Paradise Cafe. And sometimes, we hit up Eileen’s cookies for dessert, but don’t tell anyone.
And finally…shopping!
Yes, it IS fun, but if you refer to the list above of OTHER things we have to do, you can see that shopping actually constitutes a pretty limited portion of our day. Still, did I mention it was fun?
And that’s it! Well, not really. There are a million other things that make up our day (like jumping on the back of a speeding golf cart at Lanaha Nurseries as it takes us to a giant pit of tree branches, where we then proceed to pick a few to incorporate into a design…), but that’s another blog post altogether.

The interior design process at Fluff Your Stuff often starts with a digital mood board that we present to our clients so that they can get a better understanding of how we’d like to help them transform their space. Usually a mood board will show several options for key furniture items or decor, such as rugs, upholstered chairs, artwork, etc. In the mood board above, you can see that we wanted to illustrate a specific color palette, while still allowing for some flexibility. For instance, we showed her four very different rug options, and as you’ll see in the photos below, she ended up going with option number two. We also ended up using the artwork and one of the pillows shown on the board, but went in an entirely different direction with the armchair. As you can see, the mood board is really just a jumping-off point that loosely guides the designer and client in their journey towards a newly designed room!
